about

MEANING: A song about two close friends approaching distance and separation.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Highland Park, Los Angeles.

FICTION: In the performance "The Closest Farthest Away," the song is heard by a nuclear physicist bus driver from his old bus' soviet radio. Moments later it is performed live by an American band in the Havana Club bar as Ana says goodbye to her childhood friend who is leaving Cuba to live in Florida.

INFLUENCES: Echo and the Bunnyman, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, Beck, Arcade Fire, Beatles

OTHER: During the 60s and 70s American music (such as the Beatles and jazz) was banned from Cuban radio. Many Cubans however would figure out how to catch radio signals from the distant Florida Keys. Still today, live American music is rarely heard in Cuba because of the travel restrictions opposed by both governments on cultural exchange between the two societies.

lyrics

I’d like to stay here
Lose track of time
In all that’s left here
My future won’t arrive

I’d count the minutes till this day
Now that it’s here what’s left to say?

Familiar faces
Pass into shade
A crowded city
Is empty all the same

Swim out to sea and close my eyes
Tell all the memories to hide.

I’d rather split myself in two
Than spend my life away from you

Thoughts aren’t spoken
Words aren’t heard
The space between us
Is so absurd

I’ve tried and failed to recollect
All of the reasons that I left

I’d rather split myself
Than spend my life away from you
I’d rather split myself

How far back do you remember?
How far forward do you dream?
